Discount Rug

Yesterday at my aunt’s house, her husband was telling us about this discount rug they got at the local décor store. There were lots of cheap rugs on several counters. It was like a clearance sale or something. I was like, they are totally making a big deal about this and my mom was all, “that’s because these things can be pretty expensive”. Well yeah, unless these floor decors are typical mimics and second rate stuffs. Then my uncle told us about the amazing discount oriental rugs and now my parents are totally thinking of getting one. I made a mental note to tell them later that we don’t need it. Seriously, that discount rug on the floor was doing a good job on being the star of the night. I mean even if they’re cheap rugs and carpets are totally on the same league right?

Then as the grown up talks began after dinner, the topic was all about the “what and whatnots” in home decoration. So I made a mistake in assuming that carpets are all the same. I knew that the former was smaller in size but I didn’t know that the difference would stop there. Rugs are not fastened to the floor and generally are not as wide and big as the floor is. Carpets are installed floor décor and are usually fixed firmly on all sides. Apparently, the discount rug in my aunt’s house is making an impression to me. Whether their custom, olefin or berber rugs, they all do the same function of adding a sight-worthy flavor in a home. Even if their cheap rugs or super expensive ones, as long as these things are doing one house a favor, then there’s absolutely nothing appalling about it.

My first notion of shags was despicable hand knotted rugs that have WELCOME all over it. My second notion was those small cleaning rugs that would usually come in handy when you’re driving and traveling. All of these changed, partly maybe. I found out later that some countries have rugs as their main source of living and export. Seriously, a discount rug from a store has like one child’s future in it. That may have been an overstatement but still, one person actually worked hard to finish a rug and what do businessmen do; they offer it at the lowest despicable price possible. Cheap rugs are actually products of labors lost. Oriental weavers rug and Chinese Rugs came from a country experiencing overpopulation, that they have to limit childbirth in order to survive. Hand made rugs like Momeni Rugs and kilim rugs are from West Asia, ravaged by different wars for decades. Each discount rug you see in a store may tell a different story, maybe even a character sketch of the maker. No more dreams of Sinbad and desert icons for you when you see oriental stuffs. Cheap rugs have their qualities and should not be put as something contemptible.

Basically rugs are floor coverings and spices up our haven. There maybe instances that we might feel like playing desert pilgrims and wonder what it feels like to lie on the intricately designed quality cheap rug you just bought. There is nothing wrong with that. Its like getting wild with the imagination or something. And maybe my parent’s thought of getting a discount rug wasn’t such a bad idea after all.
